?You have to make the decision. You have to believe it. Once you start doubting, you change your brain chemistry and you?re done.?

That?s just one snippet of my conversation with Dr. Timothy Noakes earlier this week. Dr. Noakes is the longtime champion of the ?central governor? theory of fatigue, which in short says that your brain is the one calling the shots and shutting you down, even when you have plenty of fuel in the tank and untapped muscle fibers in your legs.

The Governor starts its job the moment you clip in, metering out your efforts based on your training, previous experience, the duration ahead, your metabolic state, and information it?s gathering from your heart, muscles, and parts of the brain. Studies have shown that even when riders bonk or DNF from seemingly insurmountable fatigue, they still have glycogen stores and fresh muscle fibers at their disposal. The Governor for other reasons simply decided it was best to not go on. It?s a protective mechanism. But also in some instances perhaps an overprotective mechanism.

You can distract the Governor. It likes music quite a bit, which is why streaming your favorite tunes through earbuds is a proven ergogenic aid. Though this is debatable, it may also have a sweet tooth. Studies show just swishing a carbohydrate beverage (without even swallowing a drop) is enough to light up the reward centers in the brain and enhance performance, presumably because the brain thinks there?s more of your favorite fuel on the way, so you don?t need to conserve.

You can also sweet talk it, even tell it little white lies. You just really need to believe them, says Noakes. ?You have to believe the outcome,? he says. ?When you focus on your goal outcome and not accept slowing down, you go further. We have a fight and flight mechanism. You just want to flee. You don?t want to think. As soon as you start to think about other options, you?re going to slow down.?

Of all the things you can do in a race situation, negative self talk may be the worst. Not only because it gives the Governor free rein to flick the big off switch, but it also burns through your energy stores faster than a California wildfire. Your brain uses 130 to 150 grams of glucose on a calm day (that?s about six to seven grams, or two Hershey?s Kisses, an hour). Even a brief period of mild stress, sends its blood sugar usage soaring 12 percent, says sports nutritionist Donna Marlor. Racing? Forget about it. Worrying your brains out before and during a race? I imagine I could burn through a bag or two of chocolate confections with my pre-race fretting alone. As if that?s not bad enough, Marlor also informs me that mental fatigue can weaken muscle contractions by up to 25 percent. Oy! I can barely pedal just thinking about it.

Seriously. Once the gun goes off, I?m usually in a happy, confident place. But anyone who has read this blog for more than oh, a month or two, knows I can wallow in some pretty deep pre-event misery, and that my demons say nasty things to me during times of weakness during hard training days and, yes, sometimes races. And I?ll be honest. When I can?t shut them up, I can literally feel my legs shutting down and my insides twisting up like some giant is wringing me out like a ragged dishtowel.

So do I believe that I can develop some superhuman winning powers if I learn the secret to managing the angst? Not really. But I do believe that how I think and talk to myself is every bit as important to performance as the eggs and oats I dish onto my breakfast plate race day morning, the pre-race warm up I perform, and whether I run bottles or a hydration pack. It?s all part of the matrix that adds up to a good, or not so good, day. And though I may not be able to control the circumstances of any given race situation, I can control how I frame them. Or at least I can try. That much I believe. And that?s a step in the right direction. Right Governor? Right.
